I was wondering if can we have some space on the forum to Shows Things from our countries (Story, Culture, etc). You know we have people from lots of countries here (New Zealand, Latvia, United States, Argentina, etc) and I think I would be cool to let the others know a little bit about where we come from. Everybody knows a lot about USA, but I´m shure that everybody here will be glad to know something about other places and of Course USa too...
Anyway, Latvia was proclaimed at November 18, 1918. Almost instantly song "Dievs, svētī Latviju" (God bless Latvia) was proclaimed the anthem. Riga was the capital. In 1940, the frigging Soviets occupated Latvia, and so we were under the Iron Curtain for 50 years. In May 4, 1990 Latvia re-estabilshed it's independence and arrested pro-Soviets from Latvia for crimes against Latvian country. In 2004 Latvia got both in EU and NATO.
Latvia also has great sportspeople. Female basketball player Uļjana Semjonova is considered one of the all-time best female basketball players in the world. At the moment Andris Biedriņš is playing in the NBA team "Golden State Warriors", and is considered one of the best players of the team now. There are also many great ice hockey players. At the moment there are many players in the NHL. Kārlis Skrastiņš (nicknamed Scratch or Iron Man due to his record of most consecutive games for a defenseman, Colorado Avalanche), Sandis Ozoliņš (injured, NY Rangers), Raitis Ivanāns ("policeman", LA Kings), Jānis Sprukts (usually a reserve player, Florida Panthers), Mārtiņš Karsums (contract with the team, but plays in farm team, Boston Bruins). Also, players like Helmuts Balderis, Artūrs Irbe and Sergejs Žoltoks (died on ice, 2004) were playing in NHL. Ozoliņš even won the Lord Stanley cup in 1996 with his team, Colorado Avalanche. Our hockey team is one of the best in the world, and in the World Championships it usually gets 5th to 10th place. We even hosted it last year. We also had some historic wins. In 1999 we won Russians (3:2) in their own home, in the world championship. In 2005 we were trailing 2:4 to Belarussians in early 3rd period. But then the coach asked to pull the goalie and add an extra attacker. Team scored 3 consecutive goals and we won with result 5:4. Thanks to that, we got in the olympic games. Our football (soccer) team qualified for Euro 2004. Recently, our Mārtiņš Rubenis got 3rd place in the olympics, in the luge competition. It was the first ever medal in winter olympics for Latvia. Also brothers Vinters got 6th and 10th place in the famous Lisbon-Dakar rally.
The US president has been in Latvia 3 times. First was in 1994 (Bill Clinton), second in 2005 and third in 2006 (both by George W. Bush). Latvia also hosted the NATO summit in 2006, and the Latvian president Vaira Vīķe-Freiberga was a candidate for being the ANO general secretary. The first time, when in Saeima (Latvian parliament) elections the party of the now-prime minister got the most votes was in 2006. This party is Tautas Partija (People's party).
That is all, if somebody has some questions, feel free to ask them!
WOW! Great commentary Latvietis! I wish more people in the USA could see and read about this sort of thing because there is so much about our country which is taken for granted every day. We have not had any other country occupy our land since our own revolutionary war in the 1700s and this great priveledge is often never thought about.
My wife and I have a Lithuanian friend who we have known for about 5 years via the internet...and she now lives near us in Houston Texas. She has some stories to tell as well...stories of things that nobody would ever wish to live and some people find very hard to believe.
Thank you for sharing your commentary about Latvia. Some time I will post something about MY country, the (former) republic of Texas .
Butt what time would it be if you were on the moon Titan sitting at the beach?
Since Titan reeks, there'd be no need to go there anytime soon. Butt in general it'd be the same time as you finish relaxing on the porcelain throne, or variable depending on how generous the portions of baked beans are consumed.
...Strawberry fields. Nothing is real. And nothing to get hung about...
The Texas state flag, the Lone Star Flag, was created not far from where I live currently in Montgomery County...north of the city of Houston.
The state bird is the Mockingbird.
The state flower is called the Bluebonnet. Among the Bluebonnets pictured you can see what are called Indian Paintbrushes...this is quite typical of Texas wildflowers as you drive along the highways.
Texas is full of amusement parks. Two of the more popular are the Schlitterbahn water parks, located in several places...and Six Flags Over Texas located in Arlington, between Ft Worth and Dallas.
American football is one of the most popular sports in the state. There are several major universities throughout the state for those who follow College football, and there are two professional teams, The Dallas Cowboys and the Houston Texans.
There are 3 professional basketball teams in Texas, the San Antonio Spurs, the Dallas Mavericks, and the Houston Rockets. And there are two Major League Baseball teams, the Texas Rangers and the Houston Astros.
The Old Republic of Texas[/size]
The Republic of Texas was a country in North America between the United States and Mexico that existed from 1836 to 1845. Formed as a break-away republic from Mexico as a result of the Texas Revolution, the nation claimed borders that encompassed an area that included all of the present U.S. state of Texas, as well as parts of present-day New Mexico, Oklahoma, Kansas, Colorado, and Wyoming.
One of the more revered landmarks in Texas is The Alamo. It is here that 189 revolutionaries made up of Texans, Tennesseeans, and Tex-Mexicans, and volouteers from all over Europe, were sieged by 2000 Mexican troops commanded by General Santa Anna. It is estimated that the 189 men at the Alamo managed to take out approximately 600 Mexican troops before all 189 of them perished during that 13 day siege. General Sam Houston, who would later become President of Texas, was still building an army to confront Santa Anna during this time. "Remember The Alamo" became the battle cry for Sam Houston's troops as they fought and defeated Santa Anna's army at San Jacinto not long after the fall of the Alamo.
The old mission is now a shrine in downtown San Antonio. A few years ago Rocker Ozzy Osborne visited the Alamo and decided it would be funny (I guess), or make some crazy statement, if he were to pee on the Alamo...he did. There are not many in Texas who would give Ozzy the time of day after showing such utter contempt and disrespect for the shrine which has been held sacred for many generations. I don't think Ozzy is welcome to ever return to San Antonio.
The Republic of Texas became part of the United States in 1845. One of the terms of agreement in joining the union was that the Texas Flag would always fly as high as the national colors...the Stars & Stripes...because Texas had been a republic. While every other state in the union must fly their flag a few feet below the US National flag, the Texas flag flies at the same height. The state capitol building in Austin stands a few feet taller than the Nation's Capitol in Washington DC. These are big issues to some people, I am not all that concerned with them myself...but am intrigued by them.
There is a lot more I could say about Texas, but I've already posted a lot more than I had originally intended. Texas is a unique place, and it is also a melting pot of different cultures from all over the world. It gets hotter than hades in the Summer time, but in the part of the state where I live the Winters are pretty mild, temperatures remaining well above freezing most of the time, freezing maybe 2 or 3 times during the season. Seldom any snow and I LIKE THAT!

aieahaole48: LOVE YOUR HUMOR RE THE PAUL/'FAUL' ISSUE! First time I've laughed out loud since I was widowed in 2012. YES, the pic of Paul with the black woman was from '66, during the Beatles U.S. tour - she was one of the Ronettes, one of the opening acts.
